The European Digital Identity Wallet takes shape: what the pilots are teaching us

Large-scale EUDI Wallet pilots are stress-testing payments, travel, education and health use cases across the EU. The lessons matter for every business that verifies identity today.

Across 2024 and into 2025, four large-scale pilot consortia spanning hundreds of organisations have been stress-testing the European Digital Identity Wallet: opening bank accounts, boarding flights, presenting diplomas, collecting prescriptions. With the eIDAS 2.0 framework in force and implementing acts arriving, the pilots are turning regulation into engineering reality.

What the pilots keep confirming

Three lessons recur. First, the hard part is not the wallet app but the trust chain behind it: someone must verify the identity to government standard before a credential is issued, and someone must stand behind that verification legally. Second, relying parties want one integration, not twenty-seven national variants. Third, users accept identity wallets when the first experience is effortless and reuse is instant.

Reusable identity is already real

That model does not need to wait for 2026 deadlines. WeVerify's Reusable Identity Wallet runs it in production today: verify once with NFC and biometrics, receive a qualified certificate, and present it across any verification or signing flow with a QR code. As a Qualified Trust Service Provider, WeVerify is exactly the kind of anchor the EUDI ecosystem is being built around, and businesses that integrate verified-identity flows now will find the wallet era an upgrade, not a migration.
