April 2026 compressed years of digital-identity policy into one visible month. On 2 April, Spain's MiDNI made the national ID officially usable from a phone, with banks, hotels and public administrations required to accept it. On 15 April, the European Commission's white-label age-verification solution reached feature-readiness: a privacy-preserving app that proves "over 18" without revealing anything else, built to interoperate with the coming EUDI Wallets. And on 29 April, a Commission Recommendation set the clock: member-state implementation plans by the end of June, at least one compliant age-verification solution per member state urged by year-end.
Citizens will now expect this
The strategic shift is expectation. Once a Spanish citizen checks into a hotel with a phone, or a French teenager's parent sees an age check that reveals nothing but an age, document-photocopy rituals start feeling archaic everywhere. Businesses across the EU inherit that expectation regardless of their own member state's pace.
Meeting the expectation today
